SO You Want To Go Self Hosted

moving-self-hosted

During my recent ‘growth spurt’, and migration of my blog and business into one website, I have had lots of questions about getting your own domain and having more flexibility on WordPress. Until about two years ago [when I got my first domain name – the www. bit] I had no idea about how to go self hosted, what this meant and how people did it. Imagine, I always thought bloggers with their own domain were really rich because WordPress.com prices were [a very much still are] SO EXPENSIVE!

…who knew there was more than one version of WordPress…

That was until I discovered WordPress.org [who knew there was more than one version of WordPress?!] and self-hosting packages. The ‘host’ that I used [and still do, I really couldn’t recommend them more] for my blog is 1&1, however there are so many different ones which you can read about here [I have created a little table with comparisons and prices for you]They are all surprisingly cheap [I think my hosting package started off at 99p per month for the first year and then still only £2.99 a month thereafter!!]. You also often get your own domain included FREE for the first year – they are then around £8-£10 a year after that!

Another great thing about going self hosted is that you can also link to your WordPress.com account. Often, I find this particularly helpful when replying to comments on my phone through the app. I also like jotting down blog post ideas in pages, and checking out my stats. I will write a separate post about how to do this and the benefits another day.

But what actually is the benefit?

Personally for me, if you can afford it, I would 100% do it. Firstly, having you own domain makes you looks much more professional. But also, you can start building you own domain authority score which opens up many more opportunities to work with brands. Basically, the sooner you have your own domain the sooner you can start building your score [more about that another day].

Secondly, through WordPress.org you have 100% more flexibility than you do with WordPress.com. If you pick a good theme, the opportunity to create a website that fits your requirements exactly will be right in front of you. If you would like to know where I get my themes from, it will 100% always be Pipdig. They are literally the BEST EVER! Not only are their themes BEAUTIFUL, the ongoing support you receive after purchase is endless. They also provide a fantastic migration service from either WordPress.com or Blogger.

If you are thinking about moving to your own domain, JUST DO IT! You will not regret the potential it will give your blog to grow. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask me. I am more than happy to talk you through any part of the process.

Hi! If I went self hosted via SiteGround using a pipdig theme, from a WordPress.com blog, would I still have access to the WordPress reader & write my posts via the WordPress editor? This is the only part that still leaves me quite confused😂

Hi Sophie! Thanks for commenting! Yes absolutely. If you download the Jetpack plugin, you can then log in to your wordpress.com account and then you should be able to access everything through the app! Let me know if you need any help! 💗

You’re welcome! The 1&1 package does seem to be the cheapest, but I’ll keep looking (unless you mean the Pipdig themes, in which case I do agree, but definitely something worth saving for) 💗

I used 1&1 too! Super cheap and really easy to set up.

I agree with everything on this. WordPress.org and self hosting is the way forward for flexibility and freedom. I think it’s often overlooked but the best thing for someone who intends to grow their blog/site.

It’s great isn’t it!! It totally is, it makes me so sad when I find out people pay for WordPress.Com. I think perhaps people just aren’t aware of the benefits that being self-hosted can have. Thanks for commenting.

I cannot wait to see where your blog takes you! You have a great writing style so I am in no doubt that going self-hosted will do nothing but add to that! No, thank you for being so lovely!

I’ve just bought my own domain and am loving it! I still need to learn about DA and find a theme I love, but I totally agree that it’s 100% worth purchasing if you’re passionate about blogging!
